Electrification: Heat Pumps to Heat and Cool Your Home 

You have the power to create a sustainable and more affordable future. It can start with how you heat and cool your home. Switching from a gas furnace and air conditioner system to an electric heat pump system is what electrification is all about. 

How does a heat pump work to heat AND cool your home? 

A heat pump uses the refrigeration cycle to exchange heat, moving warm air into your home during heat mode and moving warm air out of your home during cooling mode.  

Heat pump technology is not new. Heat pumps have been around since the 1950s and 1960s. Trane has 60 years of engineering experience in making heat pumps a reliable heating and cooling solution. 

Do heat pumps work in cold weather? 

Yes. Performance is based on the system matchup, but in general, our current variable-speed heat pumps are more efficient at heating in cold temperatures, delivering 100% heating capacity down to around 27° F and 70% down to about 5° F. 

We have a true cold climate heat pump coming soon that will be able to deliver 100% heating capacity at much lower temperatures.

How long do heat pumps last? 

In general, heat pumps will last about 15 years, the same as air conditioners. By changing the filter regularly and scheduling professional HVAC maintenance, you may be able to prolong the life of your heat pump system. Conversely, by ignoring maintenance needs, you can shorten the lifespan. 

How much energy can I save with a heat pump system? 

Energy-efficient heat pumps can save you up to 50% on your heating and cooling bills when you replace an older AC and furnace. In addition, Residential heat pumps can reduce your carbon footprint by 38-53%* when switching from a natural gas furnace.

How much does a heat pump cost? 

Your heat pump installation cost will vary based on several factors, including: 

A ballpark estimate for a split system heat pump would be between $8,600 on the low end for a single-stage system and $25,000 for a premium variable speed system. Keep in mind that qualifying heat pumps are eligible for a $2,000 federal tax credit as well as heat pump rebates of up to $8,000, depending on where you live and your income.

Will you still need a furnace?

Maybe, maybe not. Some heat pumps in our current lineup offer 100% heating capacity at 27° and 70% at 5°. If you live in an area with long, harsh winters, you may want to opt for a hybrid heating system where the heat pump does most of the work but the furnace kicks in on especially cold days.

Your heat pump options for heat pump tax credits

The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 offers financial incentives for homeowners like you to go green and convert from a fossil fuel-burning heating system to a qualified energy-efficient electric heat pump system.

The $2,000 heat pump tax credit is available to all Americans, in any state. Heat pump rebates of up to $8,000 are available in some states and are available based on your income. The rebate is a point-of-sale rebate, meaning you don’t get cash back, but you get an upfront reduction in the purchase price. 

Stacking tax credits and rebates can save you a lot of money.
