About the Championship
Once a year, two competitions take place: one for HVAC apprentices and one for HVAC professionals. The competition is open to HVAC apprentices with less than 3 years of experience, as well as any professionals who are EPA-certified, licensed technicians, and have over 3 years of experience. Finalists compete for the chance to
win a share of $100,000!
Round 1
5-minute Digital Quiz
Questions provided by NATE®, or North American Technician Excellence® to test technicians’ HVAC knowledge.
Round 2
Qualifying At-home Competition
Top 36 professionals and top 36 apprentices from Round 1 will advance to Round 2, where they will be sent at home test kits and film themselves completing the task.
Round 3
Finals in Florida
Top 10 Professionals and top 10 apprentices will compete for the title of “ServiceTitan National HVAC Champion” and to prove they are the best of the best.
Celebrate The 2024 Trane Competitors
Craig Childress got his start in plumbing and, when work slowed down in the summer, he was asked by his company to learn heating and cooling. He attended HVAC school and then returned to build out his company’s HVAC business. That’s when he worked on Trane equipment and mentored the 2022 National HVAC Champion. Craig Childress is the Lead Worker of the plumbing shop in Boston University's facilities department where he leads a team of 26 people.
His achievements are nothing short of extraordinary. In an unprecedented move, Craig clinched both the ServiceTitan HVAC National Championship and the Plumbing National Championship for the second time! These remarkable victories were broadcasted on CBS Sports Network.
"It feels unreal to win both championships for a second time," Craig said. "It's hard to put how I feel into words because I was shocked when it happened the first time. To go back and repeat it was insane."
Dustin Hawkins reflects on the ServiceTitan HVAC National Championship as “probably one of the coolest experiences I’ve had in my life.” After learning about the competition, he tried his hand at making it to the championship in 2023, and in 2024, he was crowned the ServiceTitan HVAC National Champion in the apprentice division.
Before entering the trades, Dustin's first exposure to the industry was spending summers working with his grandfather, who is a general contractor. After graduating high school, Dustin served five years in the Navy, initially focusing on industrial maintenance and then transitioning to military police. His time in the military allowed him to take a one-year certificate program for HVAC, which fueled his interest in the trades that his grandfather had sparked many years ago.
Now, three years later, Dustin works as a commercial HVAC service technician. His favorite part about the job is the variety – every day brings a new person or company that he can help. In 2025, Dustin will compete for the first time as a professional technician and is looking forward to the challenge!
